After a career in health research at the University of Oxford, the King’s Fund and the Picker Institute, Angela Coulter stepped aside from writing academic papers and turned her attention to historical biography. This led to the publication of a book about her ancestors, A Stream of Lives, published in 2021 and her latest book about a Victorian doctor-coroner, Probing Deaths, Saving Lives, published in September 2024.
Angela has published more than 350 research papers, articles and book chapters, mostly on health topics. Her books are as follows:
- Coulter A. Probing Deaths, Saving Lives. Troubador, 2024
- Coulter A. A Stream of Lives. Troubador, 2021

Good Afternoon Angela
One of my colleagues recently heard you speaking about John Birt Davies and so I wondered whether you would be willing to take part in our annual Victorian society Day School which in 2026 is focusing on crime and Justice. We hope that you would be able to focus your talk with that in mind ie on deaths that Coulter investigated either of actual criminals or those whose deaths could be attributed any of the injustices in Victorian society.
The Day school will be held at the Birmingham and Midland Institute in Margaret St Birmingham on Saturday 7th November. We usually have 5 speakers and would appreciate your agreeing to be one of them.
Obviously ask any questions you like. We can offer you a smallish fee and cover reasonable travel expenses.
I write as one of the programme subcommittee which arranges events for the Birmingham and West Midlands Victorian Society.
Thanks for the invitation to speak about John Birt Davies on 7/11/26. I’d be delighted to do so. I’ll also reply separately by email.
